I’d like for you all to meet Hobert Leake, direct descendant of the Confederate soldier W.W. Leake. Hobert and several other Civil War buffs hold an annual re-enactment the of ceremonial Masonic burial of Union Lt. Commander John E. Hart, known as “The Day The War Stopped”.

Lt. Commander John E. Hart of New York, commander of the Albatross, was killed in battle June 11, 1863, during the bombardment of St. Francisville, Louisiana on the Mississippi River. Unable to send Hart’s body back to New York, several of his soldiers appealed to the Confederate Masons of St. Francisville for a proper burial.

W.W. Leake, being the Senior Warden of the Feliciana Lodge No. 31 F and AM, honored their request. Leake said as a soldier: it was his duty to permit burial of deceased members of the armed forces of any government – and as a Mason: it was his duty to accord Masonic burial to the remains of a brother Mason regardless of circumstances in the outside world.
